1. The terms “victim” and “survivor”, when referring to women who have experienced gender-based violence, have generated much discussion among activists over the years.  In this review, we use both terms simultaneously to emphasize the strength and resilience of “survivors” while also recognizing the utility of the term “victim” in legal and human rights fields.  “Victim” signifies that a person has been subjected to acts that are unjust for which the perpetrator(s)-be they persons or structures such as the state-- needs to assume responsibility.  It also highlights the rights to which the “victim” has to reparations that both recognize the human rights and legal violations that have occurred and require that justice be served.
