Sexual violence is a violation of human rights and a serious public health problem. It has a profound impact on physical and mental health, both immediately and many years after the assault. To date, sexual violence has received insufficient attention from researchers, policy-makers and programme designers and it has been a long struggle to have it recognised as a legitimate public health issue. The SVRI is an important contribution to eliminating sexual violence by simultaneously addressing the lack of research on the different aspects of sexual violence as well as drawing attention of a wide range of people including policy makers and the media, to this important public health issue.

SVRI Online Event, 1- 28 February 2010:
The SVRI would like to invite you to participate in our new moderated online discussion on “Developing effective therapeutic and programming strategies for the care and support of male survivors of conflict-related sexual violence”. The aim of this discussion is to explore the following questions:
Question 1: What are the greatest challenges that you have faced in helping male survivors?
Question 2: What do you think are the greatest challenges faced by the male survivors you have helped?
Question 3: What can facilitate or hinder disclosure of sexual assault of men?
This discussion will form the basis of a briefing paper on this topic and will be moderated by Alastair Hilton, a social work consultant, based in Cambodia and Michael Peel, formerly of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Torture Victims, assisted by Wynne Russell, an independent researcher into this topic. - SVRI & Partner Events at GFHR Forum 2009 Havana Cuba, 16 and 18 November 2009
The Sexual Violence Research Initiative, Ipas and UNFPA hosted a series of meetings at the Global Forum for Health Research annual event in Havana, Cuba. The meetings brought together key thinkers from Latin America and the Caribbean in the area of sexual violence research and explored the extent of sexual violence in LAC and how research can be used to strengthen health services and reduce violence. Regional Training Programme for the Care and Support of Sexual Assault Survivors

2008 Medico-Legal Convening in Response to Sexual Violence, The Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya, 2 – 5 June 2008: Liverpool, VCT, Care and Treatment, and the Sexual Violence Research Initiative recently co-hosted a meeting in Kenya. The workshop aim was to strengthen the medico-legal response to sexual violence through multi-disciplinary collaboration among organisations and partners in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. Promoting and Strengthening Research Skills/Networks On Sexual Violence, New Delhi, India, 24-28 September 2007: the SVRI facilitated a very successful workshop in India. The workshop aim was to strengthen research capacity among SVRI members to develop evidence based, locally relevant research agendas in the area of sexual violence, and to promote research on sexual violence through the creation of regional research networks and research proposals. 19 participants from across the world came together to discuss and share their ideas and experiences regarding research on sexual violence.
