- Campaign Intensifies Against Female Genital Mutilation.

A major campaign intended to curb the old-age practice of female genital mutilation has intensified in the country with the Women and Children Desk of the Inter-religious Council of Liberia (IRCL) taking the lead in the campaign.

Of 600 rape victims recently interviewed by a Liberian non-governmental organisation, 90 percent of the women were found to be suffering from fistulas – a vaginal tear which results in loss of bladder control and social stigmatisation.

A nation-wide campaign against rape, jointly organised by the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the Government of Liberia has now been taken to the second largest city, Buchanan, with an urgent call on all Liberians to say, “No To Rape”.

“Since 2006 the statistics for rape have not declined in Liberia. Most victims are between 10 to 14 years of age, and now even those between one to five years of age are falling prey to rape,” Ms. Mensa-Bonsu pointed out.
- LIBERIA: Special court for sexual violence underway.
IRIN News, 21 March 2008. The Liberian government has created a special court to deal with not only rising rape cases, but also other forms of violence against women, Liberia’s Information Minister Laurence Bropleh told IRIN.
