Reuters, 8 April 2008. KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Widespread rape, mostly committed by pro-government forces, is going unpunished in Sudan's Darfur region and peacekeepers are unable to protect victims as young as 11, a rights group said on Monday.

Before the new fuel efficient stoves were introduced to Kalma, a camp for Sudanese people who have been displaced by the turmoil in Darfur, women like Sadia had to journey far outside the camp boundaries to collect enough firewood for the evening meal.

People working in the vast humanitarian operation in Sudan's western region of Darfur are more than willing to talk about rebel attacks and the need for civilian protection, but when asked specifically about sexual violence against girls and women - reported to be rife - they fall silent.
