Abstract
More than 30 years ago, violence against women was not on the public health agenda. Rather, it was considered a “social problem” or “a criminal issue”, thus receiving far less attention and resources than it deserved. Dr Claudia Garcia Moreno and colleagues founded the Sexual Violence Research Initiative in 2003 to shift this narrative and build a research field on violence against women and children in low- and middle-income countries, thus addressing research inequities and power imbalances in the process.
