Sarah Marsso is a feminist and anti-racist activist engaging with the Islamic tradition to promote gender equality and dismantle patriarchy in Muslim contexts. From 2015 to 2022, she coordinated the activities of Musawah’s Knowledge Building Working Group, with Ziba Mir-Hosseini, Mulki Al-Sharmani and Jana Rumminger. As part of this, she co-authored two Musawah reports entitled Women’s Stories, Women’s Lives: Male Authority in Muslim Contexts (2016) and Who Provides? Who Cares? Changing Dynamics in Muslim Families (2018) and co-edited Justice and Beauty in Muslim Marriage: Towards Egalitarian Ethics and Laws (2022) and contributed to many other publications. She is a graduate of SciencesPo in European studies and international relations and holds an MA in development and cooperation in the Middle East & North Africa from l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Lyon. From 2022 to 2024, Sarah decided to dedicate her time to a new project, the upbringing of her child, and enjoyed the mutual learning and growth. Starting from January 2024, Sarah joined Musawah’s Capacity Building Working group, to design and develop the curriculum of Musawah’s future Center of Learning. She also co-leads Lallab’s first Knowledge Building project, facilitating workshops, reading circles and the drafting of Lallab’s framework for action against gender violence building on feminist, antiracist and faith-based approaches. In September 2024, Sarah joined the SVRI Faith and GBV Community of Practice and co-chairs working group 3, bringing together policymakers, faith leaders, gender practitioners, and academics to identify barriers and opportunities in effectively communicating about gender-based violence.
