Why we’re leaving X: A commitment to building safer digital spaces rooted in care

SVRI is leaving X. We are moving to safer digital spaces. Follow us!

As an organization dedicated to ending violence against women, violence against children, and other forms of violence driven by gender inequality, we strive to uphold our values in every space we engage with.

Since Elon Musk acquired X (formerly Twitter), hate speech, misinformation, and harmful rhetoric, including content that reinforces harmful norms related to gender-based violence and child abuse, have become rampant on the platform. Moreover, Elon Musk has used it for his own economic and political agenda, which directly threatens women’s and children’s rights.

Therefore, we have decided to step away from X, and we encourage you to do so!

Our decision is driven by the following considerations:

🚨 Increase in Harmful Content – The platform has seen a rise in hate speech, misinformation, and harmful rhetoric, amplifying harmful narratives that put women and children at risk.

Dismantling of Safeguards – The rollback of content moderation and protections against abuse has emboldened perpetrators and silenced survivors. This report by the Australian government is one of many that showcase X’s complete disregard for safety measures. Unfortunately, Meta has decided to follow the same steps, and we will follow its evolution closely as we consider our presence on these platforms.

📉 Limited Visibility for Critical Issues – Algorithm changes have deprioritized important advocacy work for women’s rights, making it more difficult to reach and engage with our communities, networks and stakeholders.

🌍 Better Spaces for Meaningful Engagement – We are prioritizing platforms where we can foster safer and more inclusive and constructive conversations to engage with partners all over the world and support the sharing of effective evidence to prevent and respond to violence against women and children globally.

We remain committed to a world where women and children in all their diversity live free from violence.  We invite you to continue engaging with us on LinkedIn and Bluesky, and encourage you to sign up for our weekly newsletter and become part of the SVRI network.

See you there!
