u00e9ducatives%20et%20professionnelles%29.%5CnIntimate%20partner%20violence%20%28IPV%29%20is%20an%20important%20cause%20of%20women%27s%20health%20and%20socio-familial%20severe%20problems%2C%20the%20most%20extreme%20being%20the%20victims%27%20homicide.%20This%20is%20the%20first%20nationwide%20Portuguese%20autopsy-based%20and%20judicial-proven%20study%20about%20female%20intimate%20partner%20homicide.%5CnAt%20least%2062%20women%20over%2015%20years%20old%20were%20killed%20by%20current%20or%20former%20men-intimate%20partners%2C%20corresponding%20to%20an%20IPV-related%20female%20mortality%20rate%20of%200.44%5C%2F100.000%20women%3B%20intimate%20partner%20violence%20was%20the%20reason%20of%20homicide%20in%2060.8%25%20of%20all%20autopsied%20women.%5CnThe%20typical%20Portuguese%20victim%20showed%20to%20be%20a%20young%20adult%20woman%2C%20employed%2C%20killed%20by%20a%20current%20husband%20in%20a%20long-term%20relationship%2C%20usually%20with%20children%20in%20common%20and%20with%20a%20history%20of%20previous%20IPV.%20The%20typical%20Portuguese%20perpetrator%20showed%20to%20be%20older%20than%20the%20victim%2C%20employed%2C%20owning%20a%20firearm%20and%20without%20criminal%20records.%20At%20the%20time%20of%20the%20fatal%20event%2059.7%25%20of%20the%20relationships%20were%20current.%20In%2057.9%25%20of%20the%20former%20relationships%20women%20were%20killed%20during%20the%201st%20year%20after%20its%20terminus.%20Near%20half%20of%20the%20perpetrators%20attempted%20or%20committed%20suicide%20afterward.%20Most%20women%20were%20killed%20by%20gunshot%20wounds%20%2845.2%25%29%2C%20especially%20in%20the%20thorax%20%2848.4%25%29%2C%20with%20multiple%20fatal%20injuries%3B%2056.5%25%20also%20presented%20non-fatal%20injuries.%5CnThe%20detection%20of%20prior%20IPV%20and%20the%20risk%20evaluation%20seems%20to%20be%20fundamental%20to%20decrease%20these%20fatal%20outcomes%2C%20but%20also%2C%20the%20prevention%20of%20perpetrators%27%20alcohol%20abuse%20and%20carrying%20weapons.%20This%20work%20emphasizes%20the%20need%20to%20deepen%20the%20research%20on%20this%20issue%2C%20aiming%20to%20contribute%20to%20prevent%20both%20fatal%20and%20non-fatal%20IPV-related%20cases.%5CnRecently%2C%20multiple-homicide%20events%2C%20particularly%20mass%20shootings%2C%20have%20become%20a%20focus%20of%20media%20attention.%20We%20hypothesize%20that%20many%20multiple%20homicides%20are%20related%20to%20domestic%20conflict%20and%20suicidality.%5CnWe%20analyzed%20multiple-homicide%20events%20%28involving%20two%20or%20more%20victims%29%20in%20the%20National%20Violent%20Death%20Reporting%20System%20from%202003%20to%202015%2C%20including%20those%20that%20were%20followed%20by%20suicide%20of%20the%20perpetrator.%20We%20characterized%20circumstances%20of%20these%20events%20and%20compared%20victims%20with%20those%20found%20in%20single-homicide%20events.%5CnWe%20identified%202425%20multiple-victim%20incidents%20involving%20a%20total%20of%205424%20homicide%20victims%20%289.3%25%20of%20all%20homicide%20victims%20in%20National%20Violent%20Death%20Reporting%20System%29.%20Of%20these%20events%2C%2014.1%25%20%28n%20%3D%20341%29%20were%20homicides%20followed%20by%20suicide%20of%20the%20perpetrator.%20Many%20multiple%20homicides%20involved%20intimate%20partners%20or%20family%20members%20of%20the%20victims%20%28n%20%3D%20741%2C%2030.6%25%29.%20Few%20of%20these%20events%20were%20related%20specifically%20to%20a%20mental%20health%20crisis%20%28n%20%3D%2039%2C%202.3%25%29%2C%20resulting%20in%20the%20deaths%20of%20multiple%20strangers.%20Even%20in%20mass%20homicide%20events%20%28more%20than%20four%20victims%29%2C%20many%20involved%20the%20death%20of%20an%20intimate%20partner%20or%20family%20member%20of%20the%20perpetrator%20%28n%20%3D%2014%5C%2F31%2C%2045.2%25%29.%20Risk%20of%20homicide-suicide%20increased%20as%20the%20number%20of%20victims%20in%20the%20incident%20increased.%5CnIn%20our%20examination%20of%20multiple-homicide%20events%2C%20we%20found%20that%20many%20involve%20the%20death%20of%20the%20intimate%20partner%20and%5C%2For%20family%20members%20of%20the%20perpetrator%2C%20even%20for%20events%20with%20more%20than%20four%20victims.%20Although%20the%20scenario%20of%20a%20perpetrator%20with%20mental%20health%20issues%20going%20on%20a%20%5Cu201cshooting%20rampage%5Cu201d%20and%20murdering%20multiple%20strangers%20is%20commonly%20invoked%20in%20mass%20homicide%20incidents%2C%20it%20is%20rare%20overall.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222016-09-01%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1016%5C%2Fj.ijgo.2016.03.020%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%220020-7292%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%5C%2Fscience%5C%2Farticle%5C%2Fpii%5C%2FS0020729216301679%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%225IM25JJ6%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-12-08T08%3A16%3A43Z%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22key%22%3A%22TXW7T67I%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A9542089%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22creatorSummary%22%3A%22Figueroa%20R%2C%20Tombs%20D%22%2C%22parsedDate%22%3A%222016%22%2C%22numChildren%22%3A0%7D%2C%22bib%22%
