kground%3A%20Many%20studies%20demonstrated%20the%20relationship%20between%20adverse%20childhood%20experiences%20%28ACEs%29%20and%20diminished%20health%20functioning%20in%20adulthood.%20A%20growing%20literature%20has%20shown%20that%20positive%20childhood%20experiences%20%28PCEs%29%20co-occurring%20with%20ACEs%20reduce%20the%20risks%20for%20negative%20outcomes.%2C%20Objective%3A%20The%20aim%20was%20to%20investigate%20how%20ACEs%20and%20PCEs%20are%20simultaneously%20associated%20with%20health%20outcomes%20in%20adulthood%2C%20including%20self-rated%20health%2C%20physical%20and%20mental%20health%20outcomes%2C%20and%20health-risk%20behaviours.%2C%20Methods%3A%20A%20panel%20sample%20of%204%2C847%20Slovenian%20adults%20was%20used%20and%20the%20data%20were%20weighted%20to%20closely%20resemble%20the%20Slovenian%20population.%20A%20series%20of%20logistic%20regression%20analyses%20were%20performed%20to%20examine%20how%20ACEs%20and%20PCEs%20predict%20the%20risk%20of%20various%20health%20outcomes.%2C%20Results%3A%20Significant%20associations%2C%20as%20measured%20by%20adjusted%20odds%20ratios%2C%20were%20found%20between%20higher%20ACEs%20exposure%20and%20each%20of%20the%2016%20health%20outcomes%20evaluated.%20Adjusting%20for%20above%20median%20PCEs%20attenuated%20the%20association%20between%20ACEs%20and%206%20health%20outcomes%20%28poor%20self-rated%20physical%20and%20mental%20health%2C%20depression%2C%20anxiety%2C%20suicide%20attempt%2C%20physical%20inactivity%3B%20OR%20for%20%5Cu2265%204%20vs.%200%20ACEs%2C%201.48%5Cu20139.34%29.%20Mirroring%20these%20findings%2C%20above%20median%20PCEs%20were%20associated%20with%20lowered%20odds%20of%20these%206%20health%20outcomes%20after%20adjusting%20for%20ACEs%20%28OR%20for%20above%20vs.%20below%20median%20PCEs%2C%200.46%5Cu20130.67%29%2C%20but%20not%20with%20odds%20of%20physical%20health%20outcomes%20and%20most%20of%20the%20health-risk%20behaviours.%20Stratified%20analyses%20by%20ACEs%20exposure%20level%20showed%20that%20the%20association%20between%20PCEs%20and%20self-rated%20health%20remained%20stable%20across%20ACEs%20exposure%20levels%2C%20while%20the%20association%20between%20PCEs%20and%20mental%20health%20outcomes%20and%20physical%20inactivity%20varied%20across%20ACEs%20exposure%20levels.%2C%20Conclusions%3A%20Our%20results%20suggest%20that%20above%20median%20PCEs%20attenuate%20the%20association%20between%20ACEs%20and%20poor%20self-rated%20health%2C%20mental%20health%20problems%2C%20and%20physical%20inactivity%20in%20later%20life%2C%20and%20are%20negatively%20associated%20with%20these%20health%20problems%20even%20in%20the%20concurrent%20presence%20of%20ACEs.%20Interventions%20to%20promote%20PCEs%20can%20help%20to%20reduce%20unfavourable%20long-term%20health%20outcomes%20following%20childhood%20adversity.%2C%20%5CnACEs%20were%20associated%20with%20various%20health%20problems%20evaluated%20in%20this%20study.After%20controlling%20for%20ACEs%2C%20PCEs%20were%20associated%20with%20self-rated%20physical%20and%20mental%20health%2C%20depression%2C%20anxiety%2C%20suicidal%20attempt%2C%20and%20physical%20inactivity.Interventions%20that%20address%20PCEs%20should%20be%20promoted.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1080%5C%2F20008198.2021.1924953%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%222000-8066%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%5C%2Fpmc%5C%2Farticles%5C%2FPMC8253200%5C%2F%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22JIM2M3PU%22%2C%22UV8D7MK7%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222023-09-05T06%3A51%3A44Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
