Researching Sensitive Topics Involving Children – Managing Risk, Distress and Trauma in Research Design and Data Collection
June 14 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Research on sensitive topics is essential if we are to have high-quality evidence to understand the critical issues affecting children, and to shape and improve programs and policies for impact. However, when this involves interviewing children and adolescents, it raises ethical concerns regarding the potential for re-traumatization and distress it may cause – particularly if we are asking about experiences of violence, trauma or abuse. This may be further complicated when we consider the complex and fragile settings in which we often work. Balancing potential risk vs benefit ethically is an ongoing challenge for researchers and organisations working in this space.
This webinar will critically explore the risks associated with interviewing children on sensitive or difficult topics and their implications for planning and designing research projects through presentation, discussion, and an opportunity for audience questions.
